Loneliness

Abstract
Loneliness is a condition that is widespread and distressing for the individuals affected. Although loneliness is considered a common human experiences, it is felt differently by people under varing conditions.
The purpose of this article was to analyze the concept of loneliness as a first step toward theory development, research, and eventual practical applications using the process of Walker & Avant¢¥s (1988) concept analysis. This article describes a conceptual analysis of loneliness that resulted in three defining attribute. A model case was provided with examples of contrary, borderline, and related cases. Antecedents, consequences, and empirical references of loneliness were identified. Measures designed to address the complexity of the concept are outlines as the empirical referents.
The possible attributes of loneliness were defined as
1) feelings of separation from another;
2) a response to the perceived or actual disruption of social relationships; and
3) a discrepancy between the relationship desired and the relationship present with another. This clarification of the phenomenon has particular relevance for clinical nursing, future research and the development of loneliness theories.
The findings of this analysis will contribute to clinical nursing, instrument development, theory development, and research in nursing science.
